Hi Sara, Since we got Bypass working on this modem, and @jlemontu-org (whose display name doesn’t match his username :)) has a window of time today to redeploy it in the field, we opted to just roll with it, so I haven’t taken the time to try #modemLast again, but thank you for the fix (I understand about the bleeding edge!)
Thanks for the tips…[Read more]

@lemmon – most of them were deployed in the field working and stopped for no apparent reason. I didn’t realize we’d had so many failures until Shannon dumped them on my desk the other day.
@mbarney – we’ve gone back and forth over and over about the transparent-vs-bypass issue. My experience has generally been that the modem connects more q…[Read more]

I’m curious, were those LTE XBee3’s deployed in the field, worked properly then at some point stopped connecting to the internet? Or did you receive them and realize they wouldn’t connect upon initial testing? Just wanting to understand if this is something I need to watch out for with our LTE stations we’ve already deployed.
Thanks

Hi Sara,
I want to update you on the results of our latest testing. I noticed that there was a new release of EnviroDIY/TinyGSM, so I installed that and re-tested. Transparent mode still failed (see transparent.txt), but Bypass works. I tried flipping back and forth several times, and Transparent never worked; Bypass always did. Next, I decided…[Read more]

@shicks came over to my office yesterday with a pile of LTE XBee3’s that will no longer connect to the internet. We’re going to buy some alternative types of modems to see if any of them are any better.

Adam did you see my blog on “low cost EC sensor” ? I was using the Atlas sci probes but switched to the Sensorex probes which are cheaper. A more expensive version is available with an intergrel 10K RTD for temperature measurement. It comes with a 3m cable and pigtails – no BNC!
-
Jim, I read your blog post and plan to test out the Sensorex probes with future monitoring stations. The wiring and automatic temperature compensation would definitely be a time saver! Thanks for the comment!

Jim, Adam: I would be interested to hear if you have considering using the non-contact toroidal conductivity sensors from Sensorex for water monitoring since you have concerns about biofouling and you are in a saltwater environment. The inital cost of the toroidal sensor is high in comparison to the contact type sensors , but over the life of the sensor the initial cost I believe would be offset by the quality of the data and the large reduction in labor for sensor maintenance. https://sensorex.com/product/tcs3020-toroidal-inductive-conductivity-sensor/
I have several years using these sensors in industrial applications that required the biofouling resistance. I also helped deploy torodial sensors aboard a sailing vessel that was monitoring both freshwater and sea water. I am interested to hear your feedback. What is your expected range of conductivity measurements.

This is all very helpful – thank you!
I just updated TinyGSM via pio:
From https://github.com/EnviroDIY/TinyGSM 30f09b2..5efcc5a master -> origin/master Updating 30f09b2..5efcc5a
and re-tested (still in Transparent). No joy…and then Skype disconnected me from Jake’s computer, where the Mayfly is… not the ideal way to troubleshoot…[Read more]

Doh! I’m sorry, I was confusing you with Dan who was troubleshooting issues with the UBee last week. They’re even worse than the LTE XBee3’s.
The power isn’t your problem testing in the lab. That seems a hair low for being connected to USB, but not concerning. On the last bypass output that you posted from over the weekend, you did con…[Read more]

I just pushed some improvements yesterday to the EnviroDIY fork of TinyGSM that should help with the uBee.

Are you using the same program you posted earlier? Can you post the output with debugging enabled? (

The voltage levels logged during these tests were from 4.67 to 4.776V. The mayfly was powered via USB and LiPo.
I don’t know the Digi firmware version number on the XBee, but it was installed July 25, 2019. Additional background: What we’re attempting to do is to take this station and update it so that it’s more lenient on battery voltage…[Read more]

I finally actually did some testing with my own board and managed to get most of the same errors you found in Bypass mode and pushed some corrections to TinyGSM. It’s all about the issues with synchronous and asynchronous opening. I figured out how to make it crash every time and (hopefully) how to make that not happen. And the good news is th…[Read more]

I’m sorry. No, I don’t think it’s an issue with the battery or the SIM.
When you were running in Transparent, the XBee3 just didn’t register an internet connection. They just do that sometimes – refuse to acknowledge they are registered on the network. Sometimes switching from transparent to bypass and back to transparent “magically” fixes th…[Read more]
