What version of Mayfly board do you have? And what brand of cellular board? There are a lot of combinations of hardware on EnviroDIY stations, and some are much more efficient than others. Also, do you have a spare Lipo battery that you can fully charge separately in your office and then put it into the station? If your logger is only wor…[Read more]

Hi thanks for responding. I’m sure our system is undersized for our location. Today was a pure sunny day, last week we installed an extension pole and cable so the solar is up plenty high to get direct sun. But today we got no readings sent via cellular.
Our battery is a LiPO 4400mAH 3.7V.
The solar panel is a 1W 6V

An update – I’ve found I2C bugs in some of the ST3100’s devices – that I couldn’t get a work around. It may be to do with the AVR I2C master. Some other engineers are using it with an STM32 / ARM system that they aren’t seeing the same problem https://github.com/neilh10/STC3100arduino/issues/1
From using the STC3100 -…[Read more]

@jp thanks for sharing – power is a challenge when there isn’t enough of it. Finding enough power for your systems is the easiest step, – that is upsizing the solar panels, and ensuring they have enough solar aspect this time of year.
Just wondering, what is the standard kit that you have and source- sounds like you have the Mayfly 1.1 – what…[Read more]

We have the standard Mayfly kit from TU…the sun here in the winter is apparently never strong enough to charge the battery with the default solar panel and battery. The voltage reading may get to above 4V for a short time (maybe 1 hr per day), but quickly drops and no more data is transmitted. I dont know if the voltage i see is coming from…[Read more]

I was wondering if anybody is interested in exploring this topic. How to create a low cost bubbler depth gage.?
I find my inspiration comes from seeing a few unrelated new parts and thinking what if these where put together – could that be a low cost bubbler.?
The inspiration in this case was seeing that Adafruit has a low cost 15psi air pump,…[Read more]

Have you had any luck getting it to work? If not, have you tried opening the Arduino Serial Monitor to see what the Mayfly prints to your computer when the Mayfly starts up and after each attempted sensor reading? You can also email your sketch to me at mayfly@envirodiy.edu if you’d like me to take a look at it to see if it’s possibly a code issue.

It’s been a while since we’ve used Xbee modules with our Mayfly boards, so I don’t remember all the tricks to configuring the routers and coordinators, but your Mayfly code looks correct to me. Have you tried removing the wake and sleep commands and just leave the Xbee module constantly powered to see if that helps? Are you using the Mayfly v…[Read more]

Hi,
A bit frustrating, as this was working last week, but something (hardware or software) seems to have happened. Regrettably, I do not have git VCS in place for my workflow on this, so can’t say exactly what is was that worked before. But it wasn’t overly complicated or much different from anything I’m trying now.
The basic setup is a M…[Read more]

Also, it looks to me like the cellular Bee hasn’t turned on in about a week. I checked my hologram account and it confirmed that it hasn’t been turning on.

I took your suggestion and went in and changed the channel, it was already on 1 so I just changed it to 2. I tried setting it back up however now Monitor my watershed is not receiving anything and the red suspected power out light on the bottom left of the board is on. I am quite lost on what to do, any suggestion would be greatly appreciated

If you’re talking about the external solar panels that we ship with the EnviroDIY Monitoring Station Kit, they are made by Voltaic Systems, and they offer a variety of extension cables for placing the panel further from the logger. The connector is a basic 3.5×1.1 mm barrel jack, but it has a unique waterproof design that is better for outdoor…[Read more]

Hello, the sun is low here at 48 N and we need to run an extension pole for our solar panel.
Can anyone recommend what type or where I can find a ~15′ extension for the solar panel wire? And if using that length it’ll still deliver power/charging to the mayfly?
Thanks!

Sorry for the delayed response. I am just getting back to this again.
The IDE version I am using is 1.8.13.
In the Windows Device Manager, when the CP2102 is plugged in it reads “Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COM10)” under the Ports (COM & LPT) currently.
So, today everything seems to work. The following is info that may or may n…[Read more]

Sensor readings of -9999 mean the Mayfly logger isn’t receiving valid data from the CTD sensor. If this is a brand new sensor, then it’s probably because the sensor SDI-12 channel number is set to the default channel of 0 (zero) and the Mayfly needs the sensor to be something other than that (because for Meter Group sensors, channel 0 means the…[Read more]

Hello!
I recently finished assembling the mayfly kit and have the Hydros 21 in a bucket of water, however, the data being uploaded to monitor my watershed is not correct. I’m not sure if I assigned the variables in Arduino incorrectly or if the Hydros is not calibrated properly? I wanted to check in here before I started messing with the…[Read more]
