Cutting the rod in small diameter wasn’t a problem for me. Ideally it should be a square cut.

I look at the measurement accuracy, and vented depth sensors. Especially at lower water levels vented depth sensors are I believe the most accurate.
Good measurement accuracy starts at about 0.25% of range and optionally can be of 0.1%

I’ve used titanium rod – 1/16″ Dia 2′ $1.62 – https://www.mcmaster.com/89145k28
and its easy to crimp a wire to the rod. I might be able to find a picture of it at some point.

On the ThingSpeak thanks for pointing it out – they have become painful. I have a number of legacy connections I’m setup up for.
Not knowing the architecture of the ODM2/WOF and WaterML 1.1 it was more of a reference.
Thingspeak used to be a lot more open, but Mathwork$ acquired them, and I guess they are making money out of it.

OK I think I’ve figured out something. I can only get the last variable at the moment (432) .. which is what I need for my real analysis of looking at the last value of the voltage returned and and checking it it has dropped below a threshold.

The fix that seemed to work was if it didn’t connect after a 100 AI status polls it issues

What I haven’t figure out is there another manual that specifies +CREG cmd – it isn’t in the user manual I’m using.

I’ve also had trouble with a new Hologram SIM registering to the cell network with a Digi XB3M1.
I had a working hologram SIM that connected straight away, and then would power off and swop in the new Hologram enabled SIM, and it would poll the cell tower and not work.

So to restart the thread – it can be done with RS485 wing board to generate a switched excitation voltage (from the LiIon). The voltage probably needs to be 14V+ so could be U3V50F24 to generate 24V.
To measure the 4-20mA accurately use Adafruit INA219 with a 10ohm resistor.

The sensor is 4-20mA (i’m using that type of sensor in non-mayfly Onset U30 loggers and trying to move to Mayfly/RS485).
The 4-20mA with excitation 12-36V is much simpler, but it is not supported directly by Mayfly.
